This i believe essay

Retail Therapy
Retail therapy, that’s the words people seem to use to express shopping as a mood lifter. A large majority of America are into the act to make them feel better. In my case I believe shopping does help with my moods, especially depressing moods. Every time I go through a break up or even fail a test, I try to go shopping even if it is for some shoes or ink for my computer. The fact that I am buying something that I need or even want makes me feel a bit accomplished.
When I am depressed, my first stop would be the mall. I honestly don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on a therapist, so I use shopping as my therapy. I can spend about one hundred dollars and get an outfit that can benefit me because I might be able to wear that out the next night. I have various situations where I could go cope or get away from the world and shop. For example I feel if you go to the store after having a fight with your mate and you buy some music, which could possibly distract you from you thinking about all the problems you have. Shopping gives room to think about positive aspects of life. I know it is hard to go to a mall and deal with a lot of people when you are already in an isolated mood. But if you don’t want to deal with people shop online. For me just looking at items online can almost instantly brighten up my mood. The way I use shopping to make me feel better some people might use music, or even sports to cheer them up.
I remember one day having a horrible day at work. I had a lot of arrogant and disrespectful customers.  I felt like I needed to escape from the world and buy stuff that I did not need. So I have been saving up money for about a year and decided that I was just going to go and buy these shoes that I saw at Niemen Marcus. They were these gorgeous Christian Louboutin shoes. They were open toed white and beige with alligator skin.  When I walked in Niemen Marcus the sales lady asked me if I needed help. At this point I was ready to just get my shoes, but in actuality the sales lady uplifted my mood by being so nice and warm, especially after dealing with the customers I had that day.  So I asked her about the specific shoes, she got me fitted, and then we went to counter and she rang me up. The price was outrageous, but I still felt satisfied. Buying those shoes definitely made me forget about the horrible day I just experienced. So if you’re having a horrible day and need something to brighten your mood up, do whatever that makes you happy and if it’s shopping get your wallet ready.

Reaction to presentation

I felt doing the presentation and receiving feedback from people really helped me out. Some people suggested narrowing my topic down to a specific age group. like doing how television shows affect children. shows like dora the explora, etc. one student suggested that she saw how children was affected by sesame street and how their grades dropped. also a student suggested if these shows that are suppose to be teaching children really teach them? Another suggestion was if reality tv affect the way teens behave. Also if reality tv change our reality. which i seem to be the most interested in. i feel i might use that as my argument. i feel like i can find a lot of stuff on that.

How reality TV effects a girls self-esteem

This is unbelievably true. Girls, especially teenage girls believe that they should replicate the image of a bad girl or a celebrity when they people who are portraying that image isn't like that.

Television and children

I agree how television can be educational to children, but how it can also be negative and teach your kids what you don't want them to know.

Inquiry question assignment

When I first started thinking about what I was going to do for my inquiry project, I was a bit confused and stuck on what to really do. I went through lots of topics associated with language, but I found myself joggling with a few topics. I finally figured out a general topic when I needed to. The general topic I have chosen to do is Television. With using Television as an inquiry topic I can come at this topic in various ways.  I can say how television is different in different countries. The reason why I chose this topic is because I love the art of television and simply I love to watch it.
While watching television you go through lots of moods. For example when you watch TV and you see a commercial showing how kids in Africa are living in poverty and they show everything in slow motion while playing sad music. Commercials like this makes you feel depressed and sympathetic. Or when I see commercials showcasing the new iPhones it makes me excited and leave me finding out ways to afford it. Also television shows sports and movies which makes you entertained. Some movies make you sad, happy, romantic, or humorous. Sports sometimes can make you mad when your team is losing.
What’s interesting about my topic is how television can affect people’s actions and moods.  Like I have stated in the previous paragraph I know this from personal experience. My little cousins watch the Disney channel and each and every one of them are little replicas of the kids who act on their. And I even see new fashions on television and subconsciously I get inspiration from that.
I need to get some stats on how television affects people’s moods. I would like to look up some of other people stories on this inquiry subject. I would use internet pages like Google, yahoo, etc. I know I shouldn’t use wikapedia, but I think that would be a great place to start. I would also like to use videos and actual television segments to prove my point.
I would like to know all the different ways television can affect people. I would love to be specific. For example I would like to know what show or commercial that affected you. I would also like to know what about the show down to the lines that were used so my audience can fully understand how it affected the person.
Specifically i was thinking my inquiry question could be how commercial’s and television shows affect people’s emotions and actions?

the quote that moved me

The piece of writing or quote that seems to move me the most would be a quote from the famous Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn. She quoted “Nothing is impossible, the word it self says I’m possible.” My grandmother recites this quote a lot. At times I use to feel depressed as a child she would say it to me. Then a couple of years ago I asked her where did she get the quote from and she said, “Audrey Hepburn”. That quote says a lot in so little words. It is like saying “I can do it,” not “I can not do it.”   I feel that her quote means anyone is capable of believing in themselves and have dreams, not doubts. And do not let negative comments people say to you discourage you from achieving your dreams or goals. Anyone can use this quote as guide and a remembrance that they are enabled to do anything they want. Audrey Hepburn might have used this quote when she was trying to be an actress. I am currently using this quote on my journey to be an actress. Every time I go on an audition I replay the quote in my head and it gives me a boost of confidence. As an entertainer you are use to hearing the words “no” and “can’t”, but I do know some day will my day. I am not letting those words affect me in any type of way. Never giving up is another message from the quote. If you inspire to be a doctor and you can not get threw school without thoughts of quitting remembering this quote can  inspire you to stay in school. If you want to be the president of the united states and your feeling a bit discouraged, this quote can uplift your spirit. If your scared of heights and you hate rollercoaster’s this quote will inspire you to take a ride. So this quote can also mean or help overcoming fears that anyone has.

I like the way she constructed her quote, by evaluating a word and making it two words that are the totally opposite, in meaning, of the first word. There were very few literary devices. I seem to discover only one for this quote, which is antimetabole. Antimetabole is a type of scheme specifically repetition. This quote definitely has repetition in reverse order, one being at the beginning and one at the end. Audrey Hepburn delivered this quote in a short and straight forward way. Which ultimately means you wont have to study it to remember. She did not make it complicated for the reader to understand. The words are simple. there is no hidden message and does not have any fancy language. The quote is easy to remember, which is a good thing. And I believe that is the most powerful way to express her meaning. This quote is not only shyly brilliant, but it is inspirational as well.
